Floating roof tanks are typically large field erected steel petroleum tanks equipped with a platform roof which floats on the surface of the tank s product.

Fr tanks do not have a fixed roof it is open in the top and has a floating roof only. Api 650 is widely used for tanks that are designed to internal pressures of 2 5 psi or less and store products such as crude oil gasoline chemicals and produced water. These tanks are nothing but cone roof tanks with a floating roof inside which travels up and down along with the liquid level. Floating roof tanks are usually built in a gigantic size and this would involve various disciplines such as civil chemical mechanical fire safety construction inspection commissioning and operation.

The roof rises and falls with the liquid level in the tank. As opposed to a fixed roof tank there is no vapor space in the floating roof tank.

This floating roof traps the vapor from low flash point fuels. The floating roof rises and falls as petroleum product is withdrawn or added to the tank. An external floating roof tank is a storage tank commonly used to store large quantities of petroleum products such as crude oil or condensate. The floating roof is all that separates the product from the elements. In principle this eliminates tank breathing loss and greatly reduces the evaporative lo. However by reducing emissions the increased costs can be offset or justified on the basis of reduced product loss though evaporation a product savings and less impact to the environment.

There are two types of floating roof tanks. It consists of an open topped cylindrical steel shell equipped with a roof that floats on the surface of the stored liquid.
